How can we help?

The purpose of therapy is to facilitate making desired changes in your life; increasing self-awareness and self-reflection; increasing understanding of one's thoughts, feelings and behaviours and how these interact; learning new skills to cope with issues such as distress, emotion regulation or interpersonal relationships; and, improving relationships with self and others.

Kye has training and experience in a range of evidence-based therapies to treat mental health disorders. Some examples include:

Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT); Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT); Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT); Schema Therapy; Psychodynamic Psychotherapy; and the Circle of Security approach.

Brief or long term treatment options are available, and treatment plans are tailored to meet the needs of each individual.

Medicare rebates

A referral from your GP, psychiatrist or paediatrician under a Mental Health Treatment plan entitles you to a Medicare rebate for up to 10 sessions of psychological therapy in a calendar year. From the 1st July 2024, this rebate is $141.85 per session of clinical psychology. You must have obtained a Mental Health Treatment Plan and provided it to your clinical psychologist before being able to claim rebates.

Private health fund rebates

Rebates may also be available from private health funds, given you have the appropriate cover. Medicare and private health rebates cannot be claimed for the same session.

Cancellations

Appointment times are reserved in advance and the time is set aside for you. If you do not attend an appointment or cancel with less than 24 hours notice, a cancellation fee of $120 will apply. This fee cannot be claimed back though Medicare or private health funds.

What to expect- The first session

Initial appointments are 90 minutes in duration. The purpose of the first session is to gain a comprehensive understanding of current difficulties, and the goals for treatment. Your clinical psychologist will ask a number of questions to help them understand your current needs. Treatment options will be discussed, and a treatment plan will be developed.

What to expect- Subsequent sessions

Subsequent sessions are 50 minutes in duration. Sessions can be arranged weekly, fortnightly, or on a needs basis, and will be planned with your clinical psychologist. It is important to note that therapy does not often result in a quick increase in positive emotion, although this may be a longer-term goal. Often, people find the early stages of therapy challenging as they reflect on difficulties and tolerate associated emotions that may feel unpleasant.

Privacy and confidentiality

When seeing a clinical psychologist, you can expect that your information is kept private and confidential. There are some limits to this confidentiality according to Duty of Care requirements. This will be discussed in detail with your clinical psychologist during your first session. You can also read more about confidentiality and health care in Australia here.

Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.
